Mobile’s Playhouse in the Park will present an all-new original staging of the favorite Beauty and the Beast at the Saenger Theater in on March 4 & 5 in downtown Mobile at 6 Joachim Street.
Beauty and the Beast is a beloved classic French fairy tale about Belle, a lovely maiden who promises her allegiance to a frightening, lonely beast in order to save her father's life.
A cast of 100 local youth ranging from age 6 – 20s will perform this original production with music and lyrics by Managing Director Danny Mollise and Musical Director Scott Jolly. The Playhouse original musical version takes place in antebellum New Orleans with a Mardi Gras theme. The story teaches us not to judge people based upon looks and first impressions, but to look within. As the story unfolds, the Beast’s truer, inner beauty is ultimately uncovered through Belle’s love, patience, and sacrifice.
Nationally acclaimed author Thomas Lakeman adapted the script for this performance. "All along the Gulf Coast, Mardi Gras is a magical time of year," says Lakeman. "So we thought it made perfect sense to place this classic French fairy tale in the French-speaking bayous of Louisiana during the height of carnival season. Our antebellum New Orleans setting features masked balls, parades, cajuns, and even a Mardi Gras king."
Costume Designer and Stage Director Pamela Mollise creates a magical, fanciful mood with original costumes and elaborate sets. Playhouse dance instructor April Smith Spencer choreographs the lively and innovative dance numbers throughout the production.
School Shows are $7.00; teachers are admitted free for the performance. One additional chaperone for every 15 students is also admitted free of charge.
Tickets for the public performance are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for students and senior citizens 65 and older.
The Playhouse in the Park: celebrating 50 years of providing our community with quality theatrical events & educating Mobile's youth in the dramatic arts.
