The Playhouse Celebrates 50 Years

The Playhouse in the Park is celebrating its 50th anniversary!� Come be a part of the celebration at one or more of the 2010-2011 season�s performances.� Be sure to pick up a copy of the September 2010 Arts�issue of �Mobile Bay Magazine;� it contains two feature articles about the Playhouse!�

Halloween and Christmas Shows

The Halloween show will be �Salem Witches,� an original script by nationally acclaimed author and Mobile native Thomas Lakeman. All performances will be held at the Playhouse.

Lakeman�s synopsis of the story explains, �While staging an historical pageant of the Salem Witch Trials, a group of modern-day students uncovers the long-lost diary of a genuine 17th century witch, offering an eyewitness account of what really happened...and warning of a forbidden spell that could awaken the powers of darkness.� Nothing is ever safe, nothing is as it seems, and nothing stays buried in SALEM WITCHES, a spook house horror show where old demons come back to claim new souls.�

School performances are October 21, 22, 28, & 29 at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Student tickets are $7.00; teachers are admitted free for the performance. One additional chaperone for every 15 students is also admitted free of charge.

Public performances are October 22, 23, 29, & 30 at 7:30 p.m.� Tickets for the public performance are $15.00 for adults and $12.00 for students and senior citizens 65 and older.

This show is suitable for middle and upper school students.

On December 2 & 3, the Playhouse will stage the Christmas classic �Babes In Toyland� at the historic Saenger Theater in downtown Mobile at 6 Joachim Street.

�Babes in Toyland� weaves�together various characters from Mother Goose�nursery rhymes into a Christmas-themed musical extravaganza. The story begins in the heart of Mother Goose Village where Tom the Piper�s Son is about to marry Mary Quite Contrary. On the eve of their wedding, the villainous Barnaby orders his bumbling sidekicks�to do away with Tom�in order to have Mary all to himself.� Tom is sold to a band of gypsies only to escape and save Mary and the children she cares for.� Later Tom and Mary must venture through the Forest of No Return to rescue the children who have wandered off to Toyland, and they all end up helping the Master Toymaker make his quota just in time for Santa.

All ages will delight in this fanciful production that includes�festive�musical and dance numbers, colorful scenery and costumes, and a myriad of Mother Goose characters.

School Shows are $7.00; teachers are admitted free for the performance. One additional chaperone for every 15 students is also admitted free of charge. Performances are at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on December 2 & 3.

Tickets for the public performance are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for students and senior citizens 65 and older. The public performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. on December 3 at the Saenger.

AUDITION DATES for both shows are Monday and Wednesday, September 13 and 15 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Playhouse.

Audition ages for �Salem Witches��are 13 - early 20s, and audition ages for �Babes In Toyland� are 6 - early 20s.

Auditions for the March 2010 production of �Beauty and the Beast� will be on Monday and Wednesday, January 11 & 13 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Playhouse.� Open to�ages 6 - mid-20s; please have a short song prepared for audition.
